In a world where water scarcity and sustainability have become critical issues, innovation and collaboration stand as beacons of hope. The Lighthouse Awards, launched by the Brave Blue World Foundation, celebrate these very beacons. This year, the awards recognised several global corporations and utilities for their pioneering efforts in water innovation.
Honouring pioneers in water technology
The Lighthouse Awards, established in 2020, highlight organisations that have significantly contributed to water resilience and security. This year’s winners include notable names such as Microsoft, Apple, GSK, Martens Brewery, Thames Water, and Severn Trent Water. These organisations have demonstrated exceptional commitment to leveraging technology and collaborative efforts to address water-related challenges.
Microsoft, Thames Water, and FIDO Tech: AI-powered leak detection
One of the standout collaborations is between Microsoft, Thames Water, and FIDO Tech. This partnership focuses on reducing water leakage in London and the Thames Water region through AI-driven solutions. By integrating FIDO Tech’s AI capabilities with Microsoft’s technological infrastructure, the project aims to cut non-revenue water significantly. Thames Water’s ambitious targets include a 20% reduction in leakage by 2025 and halving it by 2050.
Apple and Gravity Water: rainwater supply for Vietnamese schools
Apple’s collaboration with Gravity Water addresses water accessibility in Vietnam. The project provides clean, safe water to 131 schools in Hòa Bình province, benefiting over 38,000 students. By employing rainwater harvesting and filtration technology, this initiative not only ensures water availability but also fosters water stewardship among the younger generation.
Severn Trent Water and CirTec: Innovative cellulose recovery
Severn Trent Water’s collaboration with CirTec marks a significant advancement in resource recovery. At the Net Zero Hub in Strongford, Staffordshire, cellulose is extracted from sewage and recycled into sustainable materials. This process not only reduces waste but also generates biogas, contributing to energy efficiency and environmental conservation.
Martens Brewery and Waterleau: Driving water efficiency in brewing
Martens Brewery, in partnership with Waterleau, has become Europe’s most water-efficient brewer. The redesign of its wastewater treatment plant in Kaulille enables 90% effluent reuse as process water. This high-efficiency system incorporates advanced technologies such as high-recovery reverse osmosis and anaerobic towers, underscoring the potential for sustainable practices in the beverage industry.
Inspiring future innovations
The Lighthouse Awards serve as a testament to the transformative power of collaboration and innovation in tackling global water challenges. Paul O’Callaghan, founder of the Brave Blue World Foundation, emphasized the importance of these pioneering efforts. He hopes that these awards will inspire other organizations to take bold steps towards a sustainable water future.
