For a number of years ceramic membranes have been used in niche applications, but have not been able to compete with polymeric membranes for main-stream applications such as ultrafiltration for drinking water treatment and membrane bio-reactors’. Recently however there are signs that this may be changing with a number of companies coming to market with solutions incorporating ceramic membranes.
